Bale Barriers

Most often used to decrease the velocity of sheet flows and low to moderate level channels, bale barriers are a temporary sediment barrier made from wheat or rice straw bales which have been entrenched and anchored to the ground. Bale barriers are not designed for high pressure and should only be installed where water depth does not exceed more than 1ft at any point.

Bale barriers can be used:

  • Down slope from disturbed areas which are subject to sheet erosion
  • In swales where the drainage area is less than 1 acre

Advantages of bale barriers

  • Bale barriers are inexpensive

Disadvantages of bale barriers:

  • Inefficient if improperly seated
  • Must be properly located and maintained or they will contribute to the problem
  • Only effective for about three months
